چکیده

Fractures of the humeral shaft are common, account for approximately 3% of all orthopaedic injuries, and result in a significant burden to society from lost productivity and wages. Treatment modalities have greatly evolved since their first description in ancient Egypt (circa 1600 BC); however, fundamental management principles have remained consistent throughout time. Nonoperative management continues as the mainstay for treatment of the majority of these injuries, with acceptable healing in more than 90% of patients. Surgical treatment is generally reserved for open fractures, polytrauma patients, ipsilateral humeral shaft and forearm fractures, and cases in which there is a failure to tolerate or maintain alignment in a functional brace. Advances in internal fixation modalities have improved surgical outcomes. Operative treatment can be performed via external fixation, intramedullary nails, or plate-and-screw constructs, with each method resulting in predictably high union rates. Despite the numerous surgical techniques, plate fixation remains the gold standard for fixation of humeral shaft fractures.

Treatment Outcome of Intramedullary Fixation with a Locked Rigid Nail in Humeral Shaft Fractures

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the treatment outcome of humeral shaft fractures with a locked rigid intramedullary nail in patients indicated for surgical treatment. Methods: In this descriptive-cross sectional study, all patients were followed up for one, six, and 18 months post operatively. The Short Form Questionnaire (SF-36) and Constant Shoulder Score were applied. Re...

نتایج درمان شکستگی تنه هومروس به روش میله‌گذاری اینترمدولاری

Background & Aim: Most acute humeral shaft fractures can be successfully treated by conservative methods. Operation is recommended for certain fractures. Intramedullary nailing offers a dependable solution for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures, especially in polytrauma patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate intramedullary nailing outcomes and complications in humeral fractur...

A Pre-fabricated Bracing System for the Management of Humeral Shaft Fractures: Experience of a Centre in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND The aim of our study is to evaluate the ability of a pre- fabricated humeral bracing system in providing sufficient stability to fracture union and carry out a cost analysis comparing bracing versus surgical fixation for these fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS A review of humeral shaft fractures treated with a pre-fabricated humeral bracing system was undertaken. RESULTS 20 humeral...

Management of Humeral Shaft Fractures; Non-Operative Versus Operative

CONTEXT Functional humeral bracing remains the gold standard for treatment of humeral shaft fractures. There is an increasing trend in the literature to perform operative fixation of these fractures. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION The aim of this systematic review was to compare the level one evidence for the outcome of non-operative with operative management of humeral shaft fractures in adults. A com...

Treatment of the humeral shaft fractures - minimally invasive osteosynthesis with bridge plate versus conservative treatment with functional brace: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND Humeral shaft fractures account for 1 to 3% of all fractures in adults and for 20% of all humeral fractures. Non-operative treatment is still the standard treatment of isolated humeral shaft fractures, although this method can present unsatisfactory results. Surgical treatment is reserved for specific conditions. Modern concepts of internal fixation of long bone shaft fractures advoc...
